Activity Action
AssessmentEvaluate oral mucous membranes at least once a day and document findings in the health record.
PreventionGood oral hygiene including brushing teeth at least twice a day in children 3 years of age and older.
Possible center decision: Dental assessment in all children at diagnosis.
Possible center decision: Standing order for mouthwash for hygiene for all patients ex. Sodium bicarbonate.

Cryotherapy Instructions

  • To be administered during chemotherapy infusion of specific agents

  • Chemotherapy at high risk of mucositis with infusion times < 1 hour:

    • AALL1231 intensification 2 - ifosphamide and daunorubicin

    • ANHL1131 Group B and C COPADM - cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin

      Group C maintenance 1 - cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin

    • ACNS0333 induction - cyclophosphamide and etoposide

    • 5-fluorouracil

  • Can use either ice water or “Freezies”

  • Keep ice/Freezie in mouth continuously until infusion complete

  • Monitor young children for risk of choking
